Aging Skin 101

Aging and Wrinkles: It’s a part of life — our skin changes as we age. It becomes thinner, loses fat, and no longer looks as plump and smooth as it once did. Facial aging actually begins in your 20s, when skin firmness begins to decrease as a result of both internal (genetics and natural aging) and external (sun exposure, smoking, stress, etc) factors. As part of the natural aging process, volume in the hands can also deteriorate over time, making them appear aged.

What happens as we age?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps provide fullness and elasticity. Hyaluronic acid diminishes as we age, causing skin to lose volume while increasing the chances for wrinkles and folds to appear

Care Instructions

  • Do NOT consume alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours prior to treatment (alcohol may thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising)
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory/blood thinning medications, if possible, for a period of 2 weeks before treatment. Medications and supplements such as aspirin, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, St. John’s Wort, Omega 3/Fish Oil supplements, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve and other NSAIDS have a blood thinning effect and can increase the risk of bruising and swelling after injections.
  • Schedule your filler appointment at least 1 month prior to any special event which you may be attending, such as a wedding or a vacation to ensure you are fully healed prior to the special event.
  • Reschedule your appointment at least 24 hours in advance if you have a rash, cold sore or blemish on the area that will be treated.
  • If you have a history of cold sores, please let your provider know. We may put you on an anti-viral medication prior to treatment.
  • Be sure to have a good breakfast, including food and drink before your procedure. This will decrease the chances of lightheadedness during your treatment.
  • You are NOT a candidate if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Please arrive to your appointment 15 minutes early for topical numbing for lip filler.
  • Bruising and swelling is expected after filler. This will gradually improve over the next 2 weeks. Lumps, bumps, and asymmetries may persist for 2-4 weeks post injection.
  • If you experience any changes in vision, extreme discomfort/swelling/bruising, or areas of blanching (white discolorations) that has no blood flow please contact the spa immediately for further evaluation.
  • Avoid significant movement or massage of the treated area. Unless instructed by the provider.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
  • Avoid extensive sun or heat for 72 hours.
  • Avoid consuming excess amounts of alcohol or salts to avoid excess swelling.
  • If you have swelling you may apply a cool compress for 15 minutes each hour. Avoid applying excessive pressure when you are applying the cool compress.
  • Use Tylenol for discomfort. Avoid any Motrin/Aleve/Naproxen/Aspirin as these medications increase risks of bleeding/bruising.
  • Try to sleep face up and slightly elevated (on 2 pillows) to help with swelling.
  • Change your pillowcase tonight to avoid infection
  • You can take Arnica to help the bruising and swelling, start at least 2 days prior to injections.
  • Remember, you had several injections, so this created tiny holes in your face which increases risk for infection. Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your face. Avoid pressing a dirty cell phone against your face.
  • Avoid makeup today. It is safe to apply makeup tomorrow.
  • Please purchase a new lip gloss or lip balm for the following day if you had lip filler. We sell HydraLuxe 2 step lip kits which are perfect after lip injections. Remember, old makeup carries bacteria which increases risk of infection.
